You can do that, but it won’t work, or it will work ineffectively. If you have four RAM slots, always buy matched pairs of RAM (two sticks from the same company, same speed, and same capacity) for the best results. So, in this case, where there are four slots, the RAM should have been placed in quantities of 2, 4, 6, or 8.

If you really want to do then you can put it in any available slot. Does not matter, and you can mix and match makes- because it is fairly generic ram, with generic timing and speeds. Using 3 stick might cause your boot screen to beep, or moan that the ram is running half duplex, is uneven or might even show 400mhz instead 800mhz. That is normal.

Hey guys what if you have 2GB ram stick and a 4GB ram stick in a mobo. Would this utilise dual channel at all? If you physically connect the two sticks to two memory channels then controller has no choice, it will always use the two channels. There is no alternative connection paths that would allow it to do otherwise.
